Grendel's Sÿster
A Marriage of (Tenhi-esque) Folk Rock and Epic Doom, with all the rich depth and intensity of a dark fairytale.
Favorite track: The Wolves and the Prioress Part II.

While the phrases "down to earth" and "epic doom metal" may not usually be used together, both apply here. Although I usually try not to single out vocalists, I must mention that Maren Lemke has a stellar voice which is a tremendous boon to this album.
Favorite track: The Millennial Heartbeat Part I.

No sound, only silence. We are unbound by your hands. We are born in twilight, all forlorn, only rumbling from a heartbeat long ago.
Who brought the blight, senses all impaired and who caused the fright? Flow time would gather, by a caprice of nature? Who started the race, headed by him who banished the grace? Never will we know, our invocation was a heartbeat long ago.
The life you gave to us was merely the start, a legion none will ever know. Unending wisdom we found, the ancient heart, that we felt beating down below, long ago.
No light for the eye to see, and we denied gravity. We are born in twilight, all forlorn, only rumbling from a heartbeat long ago.
Slowly wading through the void, firstborn of the unalloyed, to escape the depth so dark. Drawn to everlasting light, parting the waves of time, you will tear the world apart.
Free from the legion most invisible broke the first of the shining souls, into the light, for all to see. Inverse convergence of millennia, by the power of gravity, into the light’s eternity.
It’s time itself that lay with father light to bear the children, the dawn of hope that’s even brighter than a thousand suns, with dying hunger to prevail over those born so weak and frail, for they are standing high above, on the shoulders of giants.
From the gardens of the wise, in your folly you would rise, just to watch the dawn of time. Dare to conquer the unknown, a fearless vanguard you have grown, holy mountains for you to climb.
Just when the last of earthen marvels unveiled, when all the buried treasures’ wardens have failed, when man has found at last the power he craves, it’s only then his mind will turn to the waves.
Led by their kind the blind are going to fall, their thanatography the greatest of all. Loud words are spoken down from crumbling ground until the sea consumes their treacherous sound.
Rising higher, higher and higher... Soil to mire, swallowed all the same. Skyward fire rising higher, monument of flame.
Darkest clouds they too shall pass. Sun not quenched but only hid. All our shelters fortified, not be saved by will nor wit. “Father, please, forgive thy children for we knew not what we did.”
The mindless ones who would accept willingly the iron shackles of the cursed gravity shall perish and once more will all become one, and all their deeds will be as though never done. And all their deeds will be as though never done...
Some things are meant to come to end before they begin. The newborn child’s an empty slate, devoid of earthly sin, clinging to its fading life, a leaf in autumn wind. The forest’s cruel thorns have bruised and cut its tender skin. The war against the wild is just a fight it cannot win, and no one knows but why the beasts would take it as their kin.
They never move or make a sound when ruby rivers paint the snow, and I have seen it oft before, in deepest winter rivers flow.
Crawling from the dying light, soon he will be no more than bone and hide. The deathful teeth unbound, no one would dare to move or make a sound.
I’ve seen it oft before. They never move or make a sound, floating in the ruby lake. How can they all be fast asleep while I’m the only one awake?
When you go there’s no turning back.
When the cold and barren giant into servitude did fall, tamed the wind and then his brother, so they fear no harm at all. Where they hide from baneful heavens, yet they ask to save and heal, and to spare them death in sulphur, fore the dying man they kneel.
Wide awake I watch from inside my cage. They fear death, they fear me, fire, my rage.
All but one, there is no fear in eyes of gold, her eyes of gold. There’s no fear, no sign of fear in eyes of gold, her eyes of gold.
When warmth of scarlet cloth and flame, soothing of walls so tall, remnants and rags and ash became, pride goes for a fall. The wishful thoughts that live within the feeble human mind could not be further from thy kin. Such is thy liberty.
Is courage not fear’s only foe or just its fertile soil? Is courage not fear’s only real foe or just a futile toil?
Stone walls do not a prison make, nor iron bars a cage. Thy bravery is not the key to free the inner self. It’s not thy liberty.
Courage is not fear’s righteous foe nor can it ever be. Courage at last is fear not a foe. See thy fallacy.
Black night, cruel thorns we leave behind us. All fears unheeded, forgotten, fading into whisper, never known, no, never known. Grey walls standing tall, prison or aegis? Or is it neither? A place to weave the magic spell of words I’ve never known.
Invisible in shadows and their paces nigh unhearable, echo through the halls of old, we’re not alone.
“Fool us all with your wisdom. Blind our minds with the wicked child, the devil from below,” so they spoke with eyes so cold. White candles burning low cast feeble light on the daggers’ silver and no more than the slightest sign of fear in eyes of gold.
Eyes of gold shine their light no more. No words could save her from, shield her from the wolves.
“No more will her words deceive us. Let the devil drown in holy water.” I behold golden light no more. Embrace the beauty of, cleansing of the flame, dear flame.

In the year 2017 in the north-central German city of Brunswick, the covenant of FLAME, DEAR FLAME was invoked. Providing a
staggering take on the most epic form of what can loosely be categorized as Doom Metal, FLAME, DEAR FLAME manage to fuse a sonic palette that features delicate, melancholy sections of clean guitars and restrained percussion with monumental, crushing epic doom....more
This... THIS is how you revive classic and traditional metal from the 80s while making it your own. I could rant and rave for a mini novel's worth of words about why this album is just... impossibility good. I've had to retract so much because of how long winded I got. Please just give it a shot if it's within the subgenres you like. playfulpooka
So I can't leave a long enough review to say everything I want. But I will say this, I love this EP. It's a great little follow up to times, and has just enough of a dynamic shift in sound to prove that Smoulder isn't a one trick pony with their first album's formula. This one really plays up the 70s prog aspects (DUST and Manilla Road influences definitely shine through even harder here). It's still Smoulder, don't get me wrong. Just a different side in some ways, all of which are good. playfulpooka
